How do social networking sites work? I am looking for the algo that they use to connect ppl - like LinkedIn?

I think that, depending on how you go about it, it can be safer than "regular" networking.

I think digital social networking is safe as long as you never tell someone your home address, always meet in public places, have an "early exit strategy", go with your gut, and use common safety sense (which hopefully you'd use anyway, even meeting people the more conventional routes!).

Way back people hung around at the same places. They they got pagers and could arrange to talk or meet up. Then they got email, and could stay in touch. Cell phones became popular, letting people talk more and text and all that. But now you can hook up (albeit only virtually) with approximately 1 zillion people, filter out those who aren't into what you find interesting, while expressing who you are in the process. Why did these services take off? What took them so long? Which is the best? Can we live without them?

Why are social networking sites timing out?
I'm having issues with Cafe Mom and Stumble Upon timing out when sending messages or uploading photos. It looks like they are both the same type of interface. I have two home computers and these sites time out on both these sites. Is it a possible security setting? Both of these sites worked for me initially for a day and then started timing out on me.

Myspace - because I've been a member of it for ages and I know my way around it well. Alot of my favorite bands are also on it.
Bebo - because pretty much everyone at my school etc has/uses it so its just generally good for that sort of bussiness.
Facebook - slightly different but again alot of people use it, including older people unlike the other 2.
I would say these are the main 3. Myspace was the biggest but now I think Facebook is the biggest and bebo is biggest with kids.

The reason i ask this question is simple, i was going out with a girl for about 2 years. I joined Facebbok and i started to add friends on my profile. Girls used to message me and write comments to me, flirty type comments.
Although i didnt really care about the comments my ex did, and we ended up breaking up.
Im just wondering, do you think these sites are healthy?

wow, thats crazy... i think it all depends on where your relationship is. I mean, i cant see myself breaking up with someone just because of some comments on MYSPACE. Now if you are sending those flirty messages back, well that maybe a problem. Generally, though, I mean people sometimes take things and run with it. On either side. A man (or woman) could get a MYSPACE account and be cheating like the one guy said or it could be used as a way to make friends and left at that. People have to know their boundries. If you dont, then thats where the problems come in. If I had a bf, then some of the comments I WRITE wouldnt be considered descent for a woman who is in a relationship. But you cant help who writes you what. Its only natural for a person to become jealous, but to break up, I dont know.
Maybe if she asked you not to, and you did anyway, maybe then.

Some girls are more understanding and less "jealous-types" than others and the same guys for guys. However, I think your girlfriend should maybe do a little re-evaluating of this situation and you should tak to her about it. I agree that it is nothing serious. People I haven't even seen in person in 3 years will leave flirty comments on my wall.

It is an awful thing when it comes to relationships, so much so, I have banned the computer being fixed in our house.

Personally, I think www.myspace.com is the most popular. Whether is simple or not, it is a matter of getting used to. Another site, is www.ourspacs.com, is a much smaller site. I like this site ttoo, because it is not as big or complcated like myspace, but myspace is still my favorite.

As long as you are careful about who you associate it with I don't think so. I used to be part of facebook, but I quit my membership because I hardly go to it. I liked facebook because it's easier to use than Myspace.

It's not really anything to do with morals, it's to do with being selective or non selective with the type of people you associate as friends. Some people are quite happy to talk to anyone, which is fine, so long as they are carefull, but If you're like me, you don't want to talk to absolute strangers who mean nothing to you. Answers is different because you feel you are doing something constructive and learning something. It's each to their own I guess, and it does give allot of people a chance to get to know new people who might not otherwise have the chance to.

My opinion is that they are a bit of both. They are a fad with SOME people, but will always have someone who likes and pays attention to them. Personally, I have a MySpace and would have much difficulty parting with it. It's very useful for many things, not just chatting with friends and such. It's a great way to keep track of family and business. I can see most of these sites staying around for a very long time due to this.

Today there are many alternatives, and in the end MySpace will not be cost effective without the large corporate owners getting money in return for the service.

With MySpace it's just a lot more interesting. %26amp; you can have a song on your profile, and more bands have myspace. there's a lot of nasty people on there, but i've only ever some a cross a few ignorant shiits, just never let myspace take over your life and don't take naked pictures. MySpace beats bebo, hands down, all the way. Bebo is just so safe and normal and secure and stuff. lol.

I think students, teenagers especially waste don't gain so much from sites like myspace, friendster, bebo etc. I will like your opinion about a site where students can find study mates with the same goals and vision and help one another out. Your thoughts are appreciated.

I think it's a great idea! And will work to some extent. But you have to remember, even though the intentions are for school, it may turn into another social area. Also, some kids would be afraid to get an account because they would be worried about what their peers thought of them. They might feel nerdy. But I think if you are sure it'll work GO FOR IT!!! :)

for years, I never touched MySpace, then one day I just gave it ago and it seems to be a handy tool when I need it.
I only have about 70 friends on my list but about 62 of them I ACTUALLY know and still speak to. These are college and close personal friends.
I check it daily, but only to see if I have any messages. Other than uploading a few new photos of me when they're taken or adding a blog occasionally, it doesn't get much use.
I tried Facebook out after a little while due to demand to sign up for work colleagues. At first the idea was novel, but then it RAPIDLY became a pointless chore. I don't want to be invited to be part of a group, I don't want to sign up to a billion different pointless applications that just encourages spamming people and I don't want to know about people's relationships.

I recently had a friend who signed up for MatchDoctor. I wanted to view her profile but it required me to create an account, so I created a fake account with no actual info (Not interested in dating, etc). A day later I get a friend request, and my profile has no info whatsoever. The friend request looks like it's from an actual person, but my question is why would somebody send a friend request to someone who has no info on their profile and might not even be a person? Do some of these people just mass 'friend request' others? I'm guessing that by accepting the friend request, I might get a virus or spyware or something like that, or compromise my computer's security in some way. I wanted to verify whether or not this happens on a regular basis and if there's a way to tell whether or not this is an actual person. It also makes me wonder what the motivation is to send a friend request to someone who doesn't have any actual info on their profile. Any answers/advice greatly appreciated.

i just signed up for a myspace account but not familiar with everything yet. my question is...if im NOT log in into my account while viewing someone else's profile, can the person that i viewed find out that i viewed their profile? does my name show up to their page? or only if im log in? when im log in, i see "Profile Views" on the right hand side and there's a number below it and i noticed that the number increases...but i dont know what that means. if someone is viewing my profile, why cant i see them? does it work like that? you cant see who views your page, just the number of times your page are viewed will show up?

does anyone have Friendster account? can you have more than 1000 friends on your list for friendster? i notice some people have 999 friends and not able to add new people anymore...so they have to create another account, creating a new email address for adding. im not sure how it really works...some of my friends have myspace and they can add people as many as they want, more than 1000 or even 2000, so i guess that's the difference between friendster and myspace...i'd like to have more than 1000 friends on my friendster page

I'm having casual conversation in a semi public area (no eye contact with others unless they get out of their cubicals) with different levels of management and sales reps. Everytime one co-worker or another will not only invite themselves into the conversation but shut me down to the point I am no longer in it.

Are people really more satisfied when they add mass numbers of so-called "friends" on social networking sites?
Myspace, for example. And I'm not talking about just the younger crowd but older folks (30s, 40s) as well, who have 200 or more adds. Are they really that fulfilled in their lives?
Doesn't anybody value quality over quantity anymore? I always believe that less is more. One can deepen the ties when you have a few, lets say 20 or 30 friends, but as the circle of influence increases, the bonds weaken. There's 24 hours in a day and only so much time to dedicate to your relationships. Just wondering if others think that people spread their energy too thin in trying to improve their social life in this manner.

I'm currently in my freshman year of college and I'm wondering if I can get a decent starting job at about 50k with a top firm. A reasonable expectation for me is about a 3.4 to 3.6 GPA. However, I have excellent social skills (rapport building, etc.) and I can get just about anybody I meet into my network. I am also graduating from a top 10 business school.
Would it be possible to work as a financial advisor/analyst/banker for a company like Merrill Lynch? Thanks.

New plans to ban sex offenders using social networking sites?

Sex offenders are to be banned from using sites like Facebook and Bebo to stop them from contacting children. The plan is to register all their e-mail addresses and pass them on to the sites so that they can block them from joining. While I applaud their efforts, how is this ever going to be policed? How are they going to know that these people aren't giving them one e-mail address and using a different one to log on to the networking sites?

That's not the way to go about things like this.
I did an internship in a probation office and the sex offenders we dealt with were told by the court that they could not possess a computer. If they had to have one for work or if they had kids who needed one for school, there would be software installed, at the offender's expense, that would track everything the offender did while online, and a community corrections officer would download the information and scan it for violations. It made a bit more work for the officers involved, and the entire family's privacy was taken away, but it was closer to a guarantee than anything else they could do.

If you are convicted of a sexual offence and used a computer you are normally banned from using them - the police will check up and enforce this. I know as they turned up at my workplace to nick some guy who lied about his convictions when he applied for at job at my firm, it can see pedos back in prison.
How do they think they will enforce this? are all nonces known...i don't think so (well with the exception of Wenger).

I can't believe they actually release such obviously flawed plans to the press. They sound even more incompetent today than I thought they were last night. I didn't think it was possible.

I think you are correct how will this be policed? Why just not ban all types of sex offenders from owning any equipment that can accsess the internet?
Oh right I forgot they would be able to sue the government for their breach of human rights
Reply:its a logistical nightmare, does this cover all offenders or just the UK and/or Europe ones. better to withdraw all access entirely. As to the accounts and using different addresses, you shouldn't have to look to far to get that answer.

Sex offenders are to be banned from using sites like Facebook and Bebo to stop them from contacting children. The plan is to register all their e-mail addresses and pass them on to the sites so that they can block them from joining. While I applaud their efforts, how is this ever going to be policed? How are they going to know that these people aren't giving them one e-mail address and using a different one to log on to the networking sites?

That's not the way to go about things like this.
I did an internship in a probation office and the sex offenders we dealt with were told by the court that they could not possess a computer. If they had to have one for work or if they had kids who needed one for school, there would be software installed, at the offender's expense, that would track everything the offender did while online, and a community corrections officer would download the information and scan it for violations. It made a bit more work for the officers involved, and the entire family's privacy was taken away, but it was closer to a guarantee than anything else they could do.

But we can create an enail address in seconds - so I don't see how it can work.
I think it's just the government trying to appear pro-active and any initiative should be welcomed if it helps protect children from danger
Reply:I have dozens of email addresses - and I can set up a new one in about 30 seconds - there is no point in wasting money on this as it will be impossible to police.
If people have committed a criminal offence, they should be locked up. The whole point of the criminal justice system is that if you break the law, you serve your time and you should be rehabilitated. If these people are still a danger they should be in prision!!!

Reply:I agree completely. How many of us have several email addresses, how easy is it to create any number of them, under any name. Maybe they should be banned from having Internet connections in their home and using Internet cafes etc. But even that would be terribly difficult to police.

Our police and social services must come down hard on them and any law which will make children saferis a good law I hope the government will make the laws even if it catches just one should be encouraged.

This is for a english class,how does social networking web sites affect our social life?
have to do a presentation. would like to know if there are any statics of Americans that are chat in chat rooms, and how does this affect our social life. what really good things can I win the class with in doing this presentation. have a little information but not much, all info will help since I am having to speak for ten minutes.

I don't know what grade level you're audience is, but I'm guessing fairly beginning.
The internet has enabled people to interact with others all over the world, and allowed a great exchange of ideas and lifestyles. Formally isolated people have an outlet for social activity.
It has also been counterproductive since it allows people to live in a fantasy world as well. They do not have to be truthful, but can be anyone they want to be. This means they do not have to actually interact with real people face to face and may further isolate them.
I would pick one position (chat rooms are good/chat rooms are bad for our social life) and then defend that position. Just mention the other side at the end. Stats are availabe through your online electronic library sources like ERIC and so on.
Just throw in some statistics somewhere at the beginning to please the teacher. For instance, stats on teens are that they are on social networking web pages a lot: 61% of 13- to 17-year-olds have a profile on a social interenet sites (like myspace). See the resource below. Usually just one stat will satisfy a beginning type class.
