Does social networking have a long term future or is it just a a short term trend?

Yes, I believe so. Social networking sites lower the barriers to effective communication in the same way that the telephone once did, and email did too.

Some peers seem to be answering this question with the assumption that 'social networking' must mean meeting new people online. I would define it more broadly, as a means of mass-communicating with a group of acquaintances. Examples of this are MySpace, Facebook, etc.

its been happening for a long time, so its not new and more than likely to continue for a long time
Reply:I think it has a long term future because so many people feel isolated, plus its an easy and safe way to 'meet' people with similar interests.

I know people who have gone on to meet up in real life, and a mate of mine met her husband online (not in a chat room!)
