Sex offenders are to be banned from using sites like Facebook and Bebo to stop them from contacting children. The plan is to register all their e-mail addresses and pass them on to the sites so that they can block them from joining. While I applaud their efforts, how is this ever going to be policed? How are they going to know that these people aren't giving them one e-mail address and using a different one to log on to the networking sites?
New plans to ban sex offenders using social networking sites?
That's not the way to go about things like this.
I did an internship in a probation office and the sex offenders we dealt with were told by the court that they could not possess a computer. If they had to have one for work or if they had kids who needed one for school, there would be software installed, at the offender's expense, that would track everything the offender did while online, and a community corrections officer would download the information and scan it for violations. It made a bit more work for the officers involved, and the entire family's privacy was taken away, but it was closer to a guarantee than anything else they could do.
Reply:Hi Chipmunk
I saw this story - talking about blocking email addresses from facebook etc.
But we can create an enail address in seconds - so I don't see how it can work.
I think it's just the government trying to appear pro-active and any initiative should be welcomed if it helps protect children from danger
Reply:I have dozens of email addresses - and I can set up a new one in about 30 seconds - there is no point in wasting money on this as it will be impossible to police.
If people have committed a criminal offence, they should be locked up. The whole point of the criminal justice system is that if you break the law, you serve your time and you should be rehabilitated. If these people are still a danger they should be in prision!!!
Reply:absolute waste of time this is.
Makes people feel good that they are doing something. The reality is it will never work.
Reply:It's called an IP address on your computer that registers what you do and where you go on the internet and they can link it to the person they are monitoring.
It will never be policed though so your point is valid and its all a waste.
Reply:its stupid the police cannot trace every computer every second of the day they got no chance in stopping that you can use a computer anyway these days in a Internet cafe a library
Reply:I agree completely. How many of us have several email addresses, how easy is it to create any number of them, under any name. Maybe they should be banned from having Internet connections in their home and using Internet cafes etc. But even that would be terribly difficult to police.
Reply:this is just another stupid idea that has not been thought through
i worry about the mental abilities of the people who run this country
duh
Reply:OMG, you're saying that the govt is proposing a new law that's badly thought through?
I don't believe it.
Reply:it seems to me that helping to keep our kids safe from paedophiles perverts sexual deviants of all types is a really difficult thing to do the trouble is we have a sex register and other laws which are supposed to monitor who these people and how they operate it keeps tags on them to stop them, none of these laws has been the answer but if ANYTHING seems to work then I say go for it.I agree with other writers who say it is unlikely to work but if it saves one child then it is worth it ,maybe the answer is when someone is caught downloading even the most "minor" pornographic material concerning children or young people they should be branded on the forehead (like the branding used on cows) but it should be done on their foreheads so EVERYONE can see that they pose a threat to children and anyone who touches a child in any indecent way should be castrated or hanged from the nearest tree.
Before all the so called human rights people /do gooders start telling me how wrong I am let me say I was an 8 yr old who was abused by a relative,so I know what I had to go through and also realise I was one of the lucky ones ,today these evil people do far worse to little ones and they stick together in groups sharing their perverted ways ,these people are devious two faced EVIL (not sick) predatory individuals who hide their perverted ways with real cunning and clever acts.Make no mistake they come from all walks of life which makes it all the more difficult to catch them
Our police and social services must come down hard on them and any law which will make children saferis a good law I hope the government will make the laws even if it catches just one should be encouraged.
The other thing I hope is that people will look at individuals in their community and if they have any suspicion about whether they are a risk to children they speak to the police social services and let them make a decision on how to deal with them.there is a quote which is absolutely right it is this "All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing,"
Reply:this is completely stupid.
If you are convicted of a sexual offence and used a computer you are normally banned from using them - the police will check up and enforce this. I know as they turned up at my workplace to nick some guy who lied about his convictions when he applied for at job at my firm, it can see pedos back in prison.
How do they think they will enforce this? are all nonces known...i don't think so (well with the exception of Wenger).
Reply:I agree - that was exactly what I thought when I heard it on the news this morning.
I can't believe they actually release such obviously flawed plans to the press. They sound even more incompetent today than I thought they were last night. I didn't think it was possible.
Maybe those bright investigative sparks are trying to keep their own sordid pass times under cover. Surely someone up there can come up with a less leaky plan.
Reply:And how long does it take to get a new email addy? About 2 mins?
Reply:lets just ban sex offenders from breathing and do us all a favour
Reply:Yes I saw this item...and I agree with you...you can change your e-mail anytime, so how do they know....there is no obligation when you register for these sites to give your correct name, so there is no way it can be policed.....yet another gimmick.
Reply:it will never work. do the authorities think the public are totally naive?
Reply:Just a ploy to be seen to be doing something I'm afraid.
I think you are correct how will this be policed? Why just not ban all types of sex offenders from owning any equipment that can accsess the internet?
Oh right I forgot they would be able to sue the government for their breach of human rights
Reply:its a logistical nightmare, does this cover all offenders or just the UK and/or Europe ones. better to withdraw all access entirely. As to the accounts and using different addresses, you shouldn't have to look to far to get that answer.
Good fake eyelashes
